Morning Rituals Zuihitsu

By Sterling Warner

Competing dominance between Sirens and silence

moth breaths yawning, arm & legs stretching.

Washing crusty gunk from sleepy eyes

pulling a toothbrush across slimy night-teeth.

Removing minute sunflower seed hulls

searching like a miner for sheltered kernels.

Blanching almonds & peaches fortifying porridge

before grinding roasted beans & percolating coffee.

Peering through sunrise windows, sipping java at dawn

watching eagles catch fish & ducklings in their talons.
